The Adult Literacy Program began operating in February of 2000. However, in the fall of 2000, the stakeholders (who were EETF, Social Development and NEP), hired Josephine Raine-Thompson of Miyo Wahkohtowin Community Education Authority, to meet with them and plan a program that would be specifically directed to the needs of Ermineskin Tribal members. The second year of the program began in November of 2000 with an established Mission statement that reads as follows:

The Ermineskin Education Trust Fund Adult Literacy Upgrading Program exists to provide an academic upgrading program for the Ermineskin Community which integrates the Cree language and culture in all program components, and to improve the learner’s self esteem and instill a sense of identity as a “Nehiyaw”, resulting in independent and self sufficient community members who will participate in, and contribute to, the positive development of the community.

This Mission statement has provided the direction and focus of the Adult Literacy Upgrading program ever since that time. In addition, the stakeholders expect that students who complete the Literacy Upgrading Program will move on to further schooling, or to employment. In the third year, 16 of 20 students completed the program, which was the highest percentage of students completing in any Adult Literacy Program in Alberta. This program is as successful as it is because it was designed with the needs of the people of this community in mind, and it is meeting those needs.
